Power plant fire on 22 Sep 1908. Fighting the power plant fire was hampered because the fire caused an explosion that blew one of the dynamos into the river, wrecked the west side of the building that housed it, and reduced water pressure to fight the fire. A bucket brigade was formed that saved the adjacent buildings. The Iowa Sugar Company stepped in to provide temporary power to customers of the city plant until repairs could be made.
