Born in the digital age, Fortepan US (fortepan.us) is a groundbreaking open-source online photo archive featuring thousands of curated family snapshots of Iowa life, taken by Iowans. For a brief introduction to the archive, please see Fortepan.us/About.
Fortepan IA is based in SEERLEY 309 on the University of Northern Iowa campus (we are affiliated with the Department of History). Our team organizes, digitizes, processes, curates, and uploads local historical photographs to the Fortepan IA platform. Most work (organization, digitization, image processing with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop) is done on site. Uploading work is also on site or in certain instances can also be completed remotely.
Interns accepted into the program will learn about:
- the archival platform (and why it’s so special in the context of public history and photo archiving)
- how to digitize photos at high resolution
- how to document and tag photos (adding value to the archive)
- how to upload historical photographs to be publicly displayed and released to the Creative Commons
You must be:
- 100% reliable and trustworthy
- excited to learn
- a good team player
- conscientious about attending meetings, tracking your time, telling your supervisor if you will be late, sick, or unavailable, and making up uncompleted work.
4 hrs. / week over 10 weeks (1 credit); 8 hrs / week over 10 weeks (2 credits; 12 hrs /week over 10 weeks
