Passenger Thomas Doty, a suburban Kansas City salesman who was facing charges for armed robbery, had purchased a significant amount of life insurance before boarding the flight. He was also found to have purchased dynamite before the flight.
Continental flight 11 was the first-known case of sabotage of a commercial jet airliner, thought bombs had been set off aboard propeller-driven planes before this incident. After the crash of Flight 11, the first organized airline and airport security measures were instituted.
The FBI agent in charge of the investigation, from the Kansas City office, was W. Mark Felt, later revealed to be the Watergate source known as Deep Throat. The crash served as inspiration for the book (and later movie) Airport, by Arthur Hailey.
