An Ottumwa policeman reported smoke coming from the roof of the Ottumwa Carpet Center at 10:54 pm on February 5. The carpet business had previously housed a car dealership, and motor oil, which had soaked into old wood planks, made it a tinderbox. Flames leapt to the Knights of Columbus building pictured here.
