"The first public school building in Ottumwa was built in 1865 on College Square, which had been set apart for educational purposes when the city was laid out. Later known as Adams School, the first building was torn down and replaced by this structure in 1883... the March 17,1933 fire started as workmen repairing the roof used soldering tools. The destroyed roof was replaced and Adams School continued to serve the community for many more years before being torn down."
