Dave Barrett was born in 1902. He traveled a lot, he went to 48 states because he didn't like to work on the farm, so he would leave to see the world by jumping trains. He lived in Waterloo in 1944. He worked at John Deere. His favorite places were in California and Salt Lake City. He could read and write, and I always knew that if you could read and write, you could know the world. My mother and father moved back to Waterloo (from Mississippi) around 1968. He died in Waterloo, Iowa in 1974. He was 72.
