Left: The sugar beet factory. Carol Herman's dad, Roland Harmening, worked here approximately 1941-44 loading beets onto the trains and loved the job. The plant was the most active during the 2 World Wars. Paul Liebau and his friends L.B. and E. S. "borrowed the canvas over the boilers" and created to make tents and a tree house. There were occasional accidents. Karl Eichler fell from a 20-ladder in a dryer and fractured his collar bone and splintered his left kneecap. He was in the hospital for some time., Later his kneecap became infected and had to be removed. Right: The 187 foot tall elevator was completed in 1946. On a clear day from the top of the head house one could see the Plainfield elevator, Shell Rock and Janesville. [WD; 5 July 1946]
