Waverly Newspaper. The original St. Joseph Mercy Hospital is razed. The building was erected as a home for Abram Slimmer who gave it to the city for a poor house. The city decided that it couldn't afford to run it and a separate home for the mentally incompetent, and so was returned to Slimmer. Several years later, he deeded it to the Sisters of Mercy for a hospital.
