When the upper part of the chimney at the east light plant was removed about 1929 the workers didn't feel they could safely take down the lower portion. So it remained a landmark whose only purpose in later years was to carry away smoke from the incinerator. In August of 1962 using more advanced machinery Happel and Hahlweg sent Charles Gabe up the ladder to begin the dismantling project. Waverly Democrat; 24 Aug 1962 Accession No. 91N0408
