This block of buildings at the time of demolition were some of the oldest buildings on main street. Many of these showed up in an 1885 Sanborn Fire Map. This block was razed for the new 1st National Bank.
310 East Bremer
Wolf's Hatchery
Building was torn down in jan 1980 according to article in paper. Was Andersons floral at the time.
Andersons left or went out of business around 1979. News paper article from November 20 1979 said there was a meeting in the former Anderson floral building at 310 east Bremer.
Fred G. Wolf was raised in Artesian helping his father design and build farm buildings. Here he assisted his mother with raising chickens. Soon Fred bought a 500 egg incubator and got into the hatchery business. Soon after his marriage to Mabel Wilharm of Waverly on June 5th 1942 he purchased a 10,000 egg incubator. Mabels’s parents, Henry Wilharm and Millie (Ackmann) gave them an acreage at the west end of the Wilharm farm and in 1926 the Wolf Baby Chick Hatchery came into being. This was located at 410 10th St. N.E. and the building/house stands to this day.
After Fred’s death in 1952 Emil Wilharm and Ernest L Mueller ran the business and the last hatches were in 1963. In 1963 the hatchery building (410 10th St. N.E. was sold to Milton and Grace Westendorf who made it their home. The building still stands today. The feed store (310 E Bremer) was purchased by Emil Wilharm who ran it for several years purchasing and selling started chicks. Emil retired and the store was sold in 1981 to the 1st National bank in 1981. The bank purchased all of the land on that block and tore down all the buildings.
The exact date is not know but at the time of demolition these were some of the oldest structures on main street in Waverly. The earliest add was from 1914 , J.J. Tuttle who was a sign painter. 1921, Berry Brothers pool hall was located there. 1925 Both this building and the hotel was next to it was up for sale. 1936 Vita sealed products, it appears they produced potato chips. The 1st add from Wolf Hatchery was in 1936. An article from February 1975 stated that Earl Wilharm had sold the Wolf Hatchery to Ralph DeGraw and that they took over the business on Feb 1st of that year.
Anderson Floral had their grand opening on Nov. 20th 1976. That was the last business at 310 East Bremer before it was torn down. Nick McCumber 05/01/24
