A sanitary sewer was installed along 1st St SW from Bremer Ave. to 6th Ave SW with WPA funding. Previously, the sanitary sewer and the storm sewer had used the same pipe and had flowed into the river, a violation of state law. The work was completed from south to north with the sewer being placed in the terrace or parking between 1st Ave SW and Bremer Ave to avoid tearing up the pavement.
Looking south and slightly east along SW 1st St. The Rock Island depot is in foreground with the end of the tracks at left. The trains then backed out to Waverly Junction. The old elevator is still standing further down 1st St.
