In late 1825, Newport led a group of about three dozen Black Rhode Islanders, first to Boston, and then to Liberia aboard the Brig Vine, which had been chartered by The American Colonization Society for that purpose. The group left with boisterous acclaim from Boston’s religious community, and Newport Gardner even composed and performed a triumphal anthem at Park Street Church just a few days before their departure. Rhode Island Republican, January 4, 1826.
