"Charles Shaffer standing on running board. Charles Bills and, I believe, Les Waltemate in the seat. Francis Alcock and mascot Jack, the one with the big ears. Wes Hinmon, Carl R., and Herman Luesonhop. Martell Beebe is standing on the ground. The other one, I don't know. I believe this was Waverly's first fire truck. E.A.Donlon, Waverly, IA."
This was, in fact, Waverly's first mechanized fire truck, an "American LaFrance Fire Combination, Pumping, Chemical and Hose Car," purchased in May 1921, for $10,250; delivery of the truck was made in October. The marching band led a parade through town; following behind the new truck, which carried the mayor, council members and firemen, was the old fire equipment that was to be discarded. A demonstration of the new truck's pumping power was held on the west bank of the river.
