Kelley Canning Co fire. August 27, 1909
The factory, which employed 200-300 people each fall, was completely destroyed, a loss of $130,000. About 200 people were in the building when an explosion set the structure on fire. The company made arrangements with canning factories in nearby towns to process corn that local farmers had raised so that they suffered no losses; 15 to 20 railroad carloads of corn were shipped to those factories each day. The directors and stockholders decided the next day to rebuild the factory.
