From the Waverly Democrat of 25 Aug 1910: "FIRST SETTLER'S LOG CABIN
Domicile of Historic Interest will be Removed to Fair Grounds.
The Bremer County Fair Association has purchased of Howard McCaffee of Waverly Junction, the log cabin which was the domicile of his forebears. It will be taken down and re-erected on the fair grounds to house the loan exhibit of relics of pioneers days. The cabin, besides being one of the oldest in the county and a type of habitation of the first settlers of this region, has an historic interest from the fact that Charles McCaffree, who built and occupied it for a time, was the first settler of Bremer county. He came here in 1845, entering what was known as Quarter Section Run, in Jefferson township. A few years later he went to Missouri, returning shortly thereafter to build the cabin in Jackson township which is to be preserved as a relic of bygone days. The cabin, which during recent years has been used as a granary, is in a good state of preservation."
