Many years ago, at Christmas, Wartburg put a large lighted star on the very top of the building. You could see it from Main Street. I always loved it!

Tom Schmidt wow.
Tom Schmidt
Lilah Hicks Grimm Ya definitely was her calling to teach. Are you a teacher as well?
Lilah Hicks Grimm
Tom Schmidt no. I work the front desk at a physical therapy office or as I jokingly say sometimes, I control access to the torture chambers.
Tom Schmidt
Lilah Hicks Grimm Hey we all have jobs right. Wartburg College is a great school.
Lilah Hicks Grimm
Tom Schmidt yes it is. My son wants to go there as well.

The path in the front is a clue. It’s not there anymore. In the ‘60s they changed from onion shaped light fixtures.

Flag pole in front is also gone. From my time at Wartburg in the late ‘70s it was the “tee” for a made up frisbee golf course during May Term.

Old Main! Such a connection to my youth! Such memories. Old Main, where the sidewalks were wide and smooth. They were the best in town! And because of their smoothness we roller-skated there n the mid 1940’s. Skate from Irving School to Wartburg for best sidewalks in town (and we knew all of them.) We were all students at Irving Elementary located on 1st Avenue SW between 5th and 6th Streets. On a couple of occasions we entered Old Main, and some of the kids even went up to the third floor where the science department housed a human skeleton. I did not go up there, but those who did were reported to authorities and they had to answer for it. We have great memories of life in Waverly during the 1940’s, and the great sidewalks at Wartburg! Jude.
