Irv Happel demolished the smokestack from the sugar beet factory in NW Waverly where Nestle is now located. The Waverly Sugar Co. operated at a profit for a time and then not so much. During WWI and WWII it operated again when sugar was rationed. Local farmers planted beets to supplement the scarcity of cane sugar. Additional photographs and resources can be found at the Waverly Public Library on the local and family history page http://www.waverlyia.com/public-library/research/local-and-family-history-collection.aspx Accession No. 18A0050
