Aboard the Star Clipper Dinner Train in July 1996. A weekend event called "Grass Between the Rails" celebrated the history of railroads in Iowa. There was an exhibit held in the civic center, a swap meet of model trains, and a staged train robbery. Tickets were sold for rides on Waverly's Star Clipper with story telling by Pat Coffie or Sue Van Hemert [pictured] from the Waverly Public Library. Another ride option was with Denny Rehder, musician and author. A railroad buff, his book 'Grass Between the Rails' was the basis to the event title. The Star Clipper began operation in Waverly in1985 using the Chicago Great Western depot at 311 E. Bremer as its base. The company left Waverly in Sept. 1997 when it moved the train to its Michigan operation.
