January 1969: Coast to Coast store owner, Russ Cantine, estimated that the goods valued at $7000,00 were destroyed by fire, smoke, and water. There was also some damaged to the adjoining Skantz store and Johannsen's clothing store. Waverly had no aerial truck so firemen had climb via the roofs of other buildings. The Waterloo Fire Dept. sent an aerial truck which greatly aided the fire crew. The firemen were further handicapped by temperatures between 18 and 25 degrees. Local clothing merchants supplied them with dry gloves as needed.
This photo along with many others was made from negatives in the newspaper archives which were donated to the Waverly Public Library.
