The first and youngest Ottumwa woman to receive her pilot's license was Ramona Barton (later Mikesh), who soloed while still in high school and got her license while still in her teens. She took flying lessons in secret and surprised her then-boyfriend, Bob Mikesh by excusing herself from a get-together at the airport to solo. Flying time cost $7.50 per hour, in the late 1940s.
