Less than three weeks earlier, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had canceled the commercial air mail contracts and handed the job to the Army. Coln's aircraft was one of the replacement planes. This was the 12th forced landing of a mail plane in the 19 days the army had been flying the mail.
The plane, a Curtiss A-12 Shrike, was one of just 46 built for the Army during 1933 and 1934, for use as Army attack planes.
Coln was later a pilot with a commercial airline.
