In 1931, Amelia Earhart flew into Ottumwa in an autogyro -- a combination airplane/helicopter. Her stop at Legion Field (the old Ottumwa Municipal Airport), on North Court Road, was only to refuel, and it is believed that Earhart did not get out of the autogyro. She was on a cross-country trip sponsored by Beech-Nut chewing gum. For more information on the Michael Lemberger Collection visit https://aspace.lib.uiowa.edu/repositories/2/resources/3157
