Waverly Newspaper. The last steam engine run on the GW line. The engine made a special run. Milt Westendorf, who later bought the depot, watches from just to the right of the pole. Background history: After setting out the freight cars at Carnation, 1385 continues on her way to Oelwein. This east-west line between Waverly and Oelwein was a late construction project of the Chicago Great Western. Built in 1903, the line greatly reduced mileage between the two cities as previously, trains had to route through Sumner and Bremer to the north. The deopt here at Waverly is typically of CGW around 1910 (from August 27, 1985 notes on the subject).
