From the Waverly Democrat 3 Apr 1942: Lois. and Eulalia Pietz, Wartburg freshmen, are shown with native articles from New Guinea where they had lived with their missionary father. Lois, on the left, holds a war drum, Eulalia holds a "pineapple-head" war stick. Shields and other weapons are shown on the table. This article ties into the fact that The girls and their mother were in the United States, but they didn't yet know if their rather was still in New Guinea or if he had escaped to Australia. See the newspaper for more details. -- In addition from the Waverly Journal 2 May 1942; Rev. Pietz did make it safely to Australia ahead of the Japanese invasion. There were 12 Wartburg graduates on the island who also made it to safety.
