East Bremer, north side, between river and 1st. Brick street / board pedestrian ramps at corners / old street light, diagonal parking. In the 1890s W. W. "Spec" Black had a barber shop right next to the river, The west side sat right on the river wall and the door was only about a foot from the wall. There was a slat fence, but the sign painted on the wall said, 'Speck Black Barber "Drop In" U. R. Next'. Over the years that lot was lost due to construction of bridge and millrace. Next left to right was the Miller Leather shop; M.O. Brye, chiropractor, was upstairs. Then Stufflebeam's barber shop, the Uptown cafe and Iowa Public Service. Apartments were located upstairs over other shops. The reason this photo was to show the lack of visibility for drivers to and from SE 1st St. Per Waverly Republican; 28 Feb. 1940.
