Sugar sack from sugar beet factory. Locally referred to as the Sugar beet factory, the corporate name was the Iowa Sugar Co. [or Waverly Sugar Co.] The factory was built around 1911. Local farmers were convinced of profits from a beet crop. They did well especially during WW I. At war's end the company faltered. Later WW II came along and the factory was activated again. Once peace arrived hard times again hit the sugar beet factory. By 1949 the company the company sold at least parts of the plant to Waverly Elevator. In 1968 the building was demolished Last to go was the chimney. The mighty flywheel was purchased by Vern Schield who set down by Highway 3 east of Waverly where it still stands in 2026..
