There was a fire at this store on Sunday, January 19, 1969. The Bremer County Independent dated January 20, 1969, has a front page article with photos. The title of the article is "'We'll Be Back' Says owner [Russ Cantine] of Fire Destroyed Store: Guess Total Loss at $200,000 in Sunday Blaze at Waverly" The Waverly Fire Chief, Arnold Schellhorn was out west on vacation. Asst. Fire Chief Bob Edgar directed efforts for a time and the Cedar Falls and Janesville fire departments were called to assist if needed. The Cedar Falls chief Dale Holms took overdirecting the effort when he arrived.
