Fred Gaylor moved his business to the corner of W. Bremer and10th St. SW and opened Waverly's first supermarket in 1963. Patrons first noticed the large parking lot. In side the door was a cafe, public rest rooms, a courtesy counter, a branch Post Office, a place to pay phone bills and an information center, a payroll check-cashing station, and a large selection of groceries. Plus, the store was to be open seven days a week. Fred eventually sold the store in 1976 to Tom and Shirley Hahn.
One extra feature of the large parking lot was it provided a place for the young crowd to meet on weekend nights. One woman who saw this photo could point to the very spot where she first met her husband. Additional photographs and resources can be found at the Waverly Public Library on the local and family history page http://www.waverlyia.com/public-library/research/local-and-family-history-collection.aspx Accession No. 02N0041
