In Charles City, Iowa, in the early 1940s and 1950s, North Main Street consisted of 75 buildings. All the buildings were unique in their own designs, featuring Native limestone, masonry construction, and durability. Some of the types of buildings on North Main Street were Clark’s Cafe, Vans Hardware, Norlin Hotel Services, Citizens Bank, barber shops, shoe shops, and Weinburge Drug Store. During the 1968 tornado, it took out many of these buildings on North Main Street, but luckily, some buildings didn’t take as hard a hit and are still standing today. The buildings that were hit got rebuilt in the 1970s.
