Ray was a 1938 graduate of Charles City High School and killed 85 years ago today at Pearl Harbor. Ray was a radioman aboard the USS Arizona. His story was sad; but not unlike other blue collar kids from Charles City. His father got an engingeering degree from Iowa State but suffered from the gas attacks in the first World War and died when he was young. His mother died shortly after his father passed, so he lived with Grandma.
