From railroad car to house. Between the depression and then the war years there was a shortage of money and/or housing. Ernest Aschbrenner solved his problem by a buying a railroad car. Here the car is moving from the Illinois Central depot on West Bremer and along E. Bremer to a lot at 120 SE 9th Ave. [just west of the upper parking lot for Bantam, later Koehring and then Terex.] Aschbrenner converted the car into a home. It was razed in May 2000 and replaced by a duplex. The Lashbrook building, seen behind the rail car still sported its cornice. The Stop and Save grocery is partially visible at right, and the sign barely visible on the right edge is Mooney's variety store. Temporary date based on deed transfer [WD; y May 1937] and store fronts. Mooney joined the Ben Franklin chain in 1937 and Stop and Save was sold in 1941. Assumed date is likely 1937-1941.
