Waverly Newspaper. Located between 1st and 2nd Streets S. on E. Bremer, these buildings were built in (L-R) 1880 and 1873. Gilrup's was built for and first occupied by the Woofring Bros. furniture store. The family also owned a furniture manufacturing business. They were quality craftsmen whose work included carpentry in buildings and court rooms as far away as Cedar Rapids. The barber shop, meanwhile, first opened as a grocery store and has been home to a bank and jewelry store as well as restaurants. The upper structures (including the bank to the left) were remodeled and blended in the 1970s by Aleff & Assoc., an advertising firm which was located upstairs.
